Abstract
High- and Low-sinuosity Stream Deposits, with Examples from the Devonian of Spitsbergen
M. Moody-Stuart
ABSTRACT
Models, based on recent fluviatile deposits, are presented to illustrate the deposits of high- and low-sinuosity streams. The diagnostic characters are: geometry of the channel deposits, presence or absence of epsilon-cross-stratification, presence and extent of fine-channel fill, position and extent of levee deposits, and paleo-current pattern. Examples from the Devonian of Spitsbergen which illustrate all of these points are discussed. It is suggested that the presence and position of levees may be deduced from calcareous concretionary horizons. Further distinction is then made on the basis of grain size, sorting, color, and paleogeographic setting of the deposits.
