Freeze Drying as a Rapid Method of Disaggregating Silts and Clays for Dry Particle Size Analysis: NOTES

Walter B. Charm

ABSTRACT

Freeze drying fine sediments provides an effective method of transforming the wet sediment into a dry powder. This method eliminates the processes of grinding, boiling, and treating oven dried sediments with chemicals in order that they may be dispersed into a powdered form. The technique is rapid, simple, and excellent for preparing sediments for dry size analysis using such devices as sonic sifters, air elutriators, and particle size analyzers.
