Preservation of Unconsolidated Sediment Cores in Plastic

J.P. Shannon, Jr., C. W. Lord

ABSTRACT

A method of imbedding cores in Lucite has been devised which allows preservation of any textural variety of unconsolidated sediment in a permanent, durable mount. This procedure does not depend on penetration of the specimen by the preserving fluid; as a result, in addition to coarse-textured sediment, fine-grained low-permeability specimens may be preserved, as well as those composed of interbedded fine and coarse-grained materials. This technique has the advantage of preserving complete vertical sequences of facies, especially of Recent sediments, which can serve as models for studies of ancient rock successions.
