Methylene Blue Adsorption by Fine Grained Sediments

Roy K. Taylor

ABSTRACT

Experiments with methylene blue indicate that it can be used to compare the cation exchange capacity of the fine fraction of certain disaggregated marine and non-marine sediments.

Sections of the Mansfield Marine Band cyclothem at Tinsley, near Sheffield, England, have been investigated and a study of the mineralogy shows that quartz, mica, kaolinite, and chlorite are the dominant detrital minerals. The cation exchange values which are thought to be related to variations in clay minerals, show good agreement with environmental changes postulated from paleontological, lithological, X-ray and optical data.
