Carbonate Facies and Paleogeography of the Blackjack Creek Formation (Pennsylvanian), Missouri

ABSTRACT
The Blackjack Creek Formation (Desmoinesian) was studied along a 450-mile outcrop belt that extends from southeastern Kansas to the Missouri-Iowa border and through central Missouri to the Illinois border. Petrographic analyses and field mapping of the thin lower carbonate unit led to the recognition of seven facies, which reflect local sets of hydrographic conditions (depth, circulation, turbulence, etc.). These environments in turn were largely controlled by sea-floor topography produced by earlier sedimentation and local tectonism. Shale-limestone lithofacies in the upper Blackjack Creek correlate in position with the fades of the lower carbonate unit.
The sedimentologic-structural settings and their resulting facies are: (1) turbid shelf-syncline--Fulton lime-mudstone, (2) lagoon/mud flat-restricted platform--burrowed dolomite-mudstone, (3) shoal-sediment platform--platy-algal facies, (4) open to restricted shelf-interplatform--burrowed fragmental facies, (5) highenergy bank-anticline--oncolitic calcarenite, (6) lagoon-positive area flank--burrowed Wilkingia dolomite, and (7) regression off of shoal-sediment platform flank--fusulinid-crinoidal packstone.
