Nitrobenzene-tetrabromoethane Solutions for the Gravity Separation of Minerals: NOTES

W. A. Mclaughlin, D. C. Berkshire

ABSTRACT

The laboratory separation of microfossils or mineral fractions using heavy liquids is greatly facilitated providing the density of the medium used can be routinely controlled to a few tenths of I percent. It is shown that nitrobenzene-tetrabromoethane solutions of the commercially available compounds can be routinely prepared to any required density between 1.20 grams/cc and 2.95 grams/cc with an accuracy better than 0.1 percent. Concentration-density relationships are given for solutions at 20°C., 25°C., and 30°C.
