Abstract
History of the S.E.P.M.
R. Dana Russell (1)
ABSTRACT
If you think the early days of our Society were simple and placid, you are wrong! A few dedicated micropaleontologists worked like hell digging up money and manuscripts to start the Journal of Paleontology, meanwhile wrangling with each other and with their brothers in the PS (Paleontological Society). Soon there were enough "heavy mineral" specialists to join the struggle and start the Journal of Sedimentary Petrology, destined to "ruin the Society financially," according to Gayle Scott, then Secretary-Treasurer. But in a Jew years the JSP was well in the black and the JP was draining the Society's coffers, necessitating reorganization and a revision of the constitution. Crisis seemed to follow crisis (and what's new today?).
This history of the first 20 years of our Society is not guaranteed to be accurate, but it is personal!
