Abstract
Direct Diffractometric Quantitative Analysis of Synthetic Clay Mineral Mixtures with Molybdenite as Orientation-Indicator: NOTES
Joost Quakernaat (2)
ABSTRACT
The use of an internal indicator leads to a theoretical formula which enables a direct quantitative clay mineral phase analysis. A simple technique for preparing-, and x-raying clay mounts of the suction-on-membrane filter type is described. The applicability of MoS2 as an orientation-indicator is discussed for analyzing synthetic bicomponent, and multicomponent clay mineral systems, in the range from 15 to 95 wt%. Quantitative determinations of kaolinite smectite and illite in relatively complex systems were accurate to within about 7% of the actual value; results for chlorite, vermiculite and pyrophyllite were accurate to within about 10%.
