CLiff Sapping by Molluscs in Oman

C. Vita-Finzi, P. F. S. Cornelius

On the coast of the Musandam Peninsula of northern Oman, intertidal burrowing by the date-stone mollusc, Lithophaga spp., facilitates wave erosion and hence promotes cliff collapse. The rate of undercutting due to the molluscs is estimated to be about 0.25 cm/yr. Although this is not exceptional, its effects are exaggerated by the morphology and recent tectonic history of the peninsula.
