Abstract
Sieve Load Equations and Estimates of Sample Size
Norman C. Janke
ABSTRACT
A semi-empirical expression for sieve loads is W (gms) = 4(O) Bx1.15, where x is the sieve aperture in mm and (O) is the phi interval between sieves. B, the "acceptable" load on an x = 1.00 mm sieve, whether it is used or not, is given by CsGKacP; G is the weight density (g/cm3); K is a shape factor; a and c are representative long and short particle intercepts measured in ram; P is the number of finer near-mesh particles, and Cs is a parameter that varies with the internal diameter of the sieve. Equations for sieve loads can also be an aid in estimating sample size.
