Abstract
The Vertical Packing of Shells and Stones on Some Recent Beaches
David J. Sanderson, R. Nowell Donovan
ABSTRACT
The vertical (edgewise) packing of scallop shells and flat stones has been examined on recent beaches and is attributed to the action of waves on disc, blade or concavo-convex shaped fragments. The process results in significantly greater shape and size sorting than that found in adjacent areas of beach (composed of similarly shaped material) in which vertical packing is not developed. The vertically packed material forms stable beaches on both marine and lacustrine shores.
