An Inexpensive Hand-Operated Sediment Corer

Robert G. Sutton

ABSTRACT

A piston corer has been developed that permits sampling of shallow-water and dry beach sands. It is simple, light weight, easily operated and inexpensive. The piston head consists of a piece of cellulose sponge that permits a partial vacuum to be created providing space for the core tube penetration as well as allowing water to soak the sediments that reduces friction and facilitates extrusion.
