ABSTRACT

A method of taking into account the changes in water content along the length of marine sediment cores analyzed by gamma ray attenuation is presented. Using previously established formulas, it is possible to choose calibration coefficients that will result in an error of less than 17 kg/m3 for the bulk density of most marine sediments while eliminating the task of estimating the water content of the sediment. Errors in bulk density due to errors in estimates of the chemical composition and grain density of the sediment are discussed.
