The Orientation of Discoidal Clasts in Resedimented Conglomerates, Cambro-Ordovician, Gaspe, Eastern Quebec

Hugh E. Hendry

ABSTRACT

The planes of maximum projection of discoidal clasts in the resedimented conglomerates of the Cap des Rosiers Formation (Ordovician) dip gently to the east and north. Palaeocurrent directions derived from flute markings on the base of a conglomerate bed, and both large and small scale cross stratification in conglomerates and sandstones, are towards the west and south-west. The conglomerates are poorly sorted and have a sandy matrix, and the fabric has been weakened because smaller clasts settled into the spaces among larger clasts during deposition. The fabric is believed not to represent the `freezing' of clast orientations which prevaled during transport as may be the case with mud flows and debris flows. Rather it is thought that the fabric develops because sedimentation, although rapid, occurs gradually from the base of the bed upwards.
