Shrunken (Geopetal) Ooids: Evidence of Origin Unrelated to Carbonate-Evaporite Diagenesis

ABSTRACT

The presence of shrunken ooids is thought to be related to the former presence of evaporites in associated rocks. Geopetal ooid textures which resemble shrunken ooids were observed in Cambrian carbonates from the Mohawk Valley of New York in which no evidence of former evaporites has been found. The origin of these geopetal ooids is related to the selective aggrading recrystallization of the ooid nuclei during a period of meteoric diagenesis. Such recrystallization, which progressed from the top of the oolite body (and ooid nuclei), resulted in the partial replacement of the ooid-nuclei micrite to pseudospar and the formation of "pseudo-shrunken" ooids.
