A Portable, Self Supporting, Hydraulic Vibracorer for Coring Submerged, Unconsolidated Sediments: METHOD PAPER

ABSTRACT

A portable, hydraulic vibracorer which takes a core 5.4 m long and 7.5 cm in diameter is described. It was used in waters up to 33.6 m deep to core unconsolidated sediments and was operated by as few as four people from vessels as small as 10.5 m in length. The unit cost approximately $6,000 (U.S., 1977) to build and was easily transported by truck and ship. A standard hydraulic jackhammer is the driving mechanism and is supported in the coring position by a guidetrack with tripod support. SCUBA divers are required for assembly and disassembly, and total coring time, including assembly and disassembly, averages about 55 minutes.
