Abstract
A Method for Dry and Semi-Dry Thin-Sectioning of Certain Water-Sensitive Rocks: METHOD PAPER
Anthony Socci (2)
ABSTRACT
A method of dry and semi-dry thin-sectioning of mudstones, siltstones, and some friable sandstones, which have a tendency to disaggregate in water, is presented as an alternative to impregnating such samples, particularly if equipment and materials are scarce.
Samples are first cut to mountable size using a hacksaw blade, piano wire, or oil-cooled rock saw. One surface of each cut sample is ground down by hand to a smooth level surface, suitable for mounting, on a series of paper grinding disks with adhesive backs. Each sample is then mounted on a glass slide with epoxy and trimmed with a trim saw using a small amount of water or none at all. As a final step, samples are ground down by hand to desired thickness on a set of adhesive backed grinding disks, and covered with a cover slip.
