Abstract
The Effect of Hydrofluoric Acid on Quartz Shape--Fourier Grain Shape Analysis: METHOD PAPER
Douglas J. Schultz
ABSTRACT
Fourier grain shape analysis of quartz grains in sediment has been applied to a wide variety of sedimentological problems. Mineralogically pure samples of quartz are required to eliminate the effects of shape variation due to non-quartz minerals. Hydrofluoric acid treatments of samples, which enables the identification feldspar contaminant grains, has been shown to have no significant effect on the shape of quartz particles, as measured by the first twenty terms of a closed-form Fourier Series.
