Control of Mudcrack Patterns by Beetle Larvae Traces
Robert Metz
ABSTRACT
Shallow traces formed in mud by the beetle larvae Rhantus are shown to exert a fundamental control over the shape of mudcracks that form on the same surface. Remnant traces preserved on ancient mudcracks as nonoriented "spaghetti-like" patterns could provide a clue as to possible organic influence.
