Abstract
Coarsening-upward Sequences in Beach Cusp Accumulations
Henry S. Chafetz, Gary Kocurek
ABSTRACT
Coarsening-upward sediment accumulations comprise horns of beach cusps on the upper foreshore of Big Shell Beach, central Padre Island, south Texas coast. The thicknesses of the coarsening-upward grain size sequences are about equal to the relative relief between the top of the horn and the adjacent embayment (approximately 30 cm). These upward-coarsening trends are due to initial growth and/or lateral migration of the coarser-grained sediment comprising the horns over the finer sediment of the adjacent bays.
