SHALLOW GAS PLAY AROUND THE MARGINS OF THE WILLISTON BASIN

GEORGE W. SHURR, Department of Earth Sciences, St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, MN 56301-4498

ABSTRACT

Economic accumulations of shallow biogenic gas are found in Cretaceous rocks around the margins of the Williston Basin. Large fields on the western margin have had many decades of production, historic production around the eastern margin was locally consumed, and small fields have recently been developed on the southwestern margin. These gas occurrences are found in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. Regional structural arches and lineament zones, local anticlines, and within-field fracture domains exert influences on production patterns. Nitrogen content appears to indicate that groundwater transportation was involved in most of the accumulations. As an exploration concept, the basin margin gas play may have application in other basins.
