The Structure and Stratigraphy of Roleta Field Zapata County, Texas

Steven M. Campbell

Abstract

Roleta Field has produced 68 BCFG from three Wilcox sand intervals. These sands are strike-oriented northeast to southwest sub-parallel to the growth faults. Regional correlations suggest these sands are the youngest in the Lower Wilcox section, younger than the Lobo sands of Webb and northern Zapata. Very few wells have encountered these sands truly “wet” suggesting the field may be a large stratigraphic trap.

Structurally, the production is from high side closures on regional growth faults. The sand sections are not “visible” on seismic data, therefore, seismic data are used to establish major fault patterns and wells are then drilled along interpreted sand “fairways”. Production seems limited only by the size of the sand and the fault block encountered.
