Relationship of Sequence Stratigraphy to Modern Sedimentary Environments: Example of the Mississippi Delta

John R. Suter, Ron Boyd

Abstract

One method of testing the concept of sequence stratigraphy is to apply it to well-established modern sedimentary environments. Rapid deposition rates during Quaternary glacioeustatic cycles in large depocenters generate sequences comparable to those in the stratigraphic record. The Holocene Mississippi River delta conforms to most elements of the sequence stratigraphy model, including Previous HitsystemsNext Hit Previous HittractsTop characteristics and positions of sequence boundaries. This conformity raises important problems regarding the time scales and driving mechanism for sequence stratigraphy.
