Paleogeography and Production of Lower Frio Sandstone: Cottonwood Creek Field, Dewitt County, Texas

Bill Layton

Abstract

Four primary facies are recognized in the ā€œCā€ sandstone interval of the Frio in Cottonwood Creek Field: (1) stream channel; (2) crevasse splay; (3) abandoned channel fill; and (4) floodplain. The study area lies within the Choke Canyon/Flatonia Stream-Plain System in DeWitt County, Texas.

The majority of the Frio production in Cottonwood Creek Field has been found by wells targeted to a deeper objective. Frio fluvial sandstones have produced more than 6 BCF in the study area. The ā€œCā€ sandstone was analyzed and mapped in this study because recoveries have been as high as 1 BCF per well at depths less than 3000 ft.

An electrofacies map was constructed to provide a means to interpret the paleoenvironments and their juxtaposition within the Frio fluvial system. By providing a model of Frio production, reservoir geometry and interpretation of lithofacies within the fluvial system, this study seeks to aid future Frio exploration in this area and to encourage the continued search for stratigraphic traps.
