How Flowline Mud Temperature Plotting Can Help Predict Transition Zones*

Michael A. G. Bunter

Abstract

In a normally pressured shale, the geothermal gradient is a constant. As a zone of overpressure is approached vertically, changes in the geothermal gradient (causing changes in the flowline mud temperature) are shown to reflect changes in the formation bottom hole pressure gradient.
