Paleontology and its Role in Oil Exploration*

Alan R. Lloyd

Abstract

Paleontology, one of the many disciplines used in oil exploration, has a very important role to play, but a role which is not always fully understood. Paleontology covers taxonomy, biostratigraphy and paleoecology, all of which are closely inter-related. The oil field paleontologist is essentially a stratigrapher whose main work revolves around establishing stratigraphic sequences and correlations. The quality of his work depends largely on the quality of samples given to him, as well as the amount of available relative field or wellsite data.
