The Evaluation of an Oil Discovery: How to Locate the Second, Third and Fourth Wells

Parke A. Dickey

Abstract

In offshore areas and in remote onshore areas it is extremely expensive to develop an oilfield. Consequently in such areas it is necessary at an early stage to determine whether a discovery is commercial, before proceeding with development plans. It is usually necessary to drill several wells, some of them dry holes, in order to appraise a discovery.

This paper reviews the basic principles of three techniques which permit evaluation of a discovery with as few wells as possible, and allow planning for efficient development in conformity with the local geology.

The techniques are: (1) interpretation of depositional environments from wire-line logs and cores by geologists; (2) transient well tests by reservoir engineers; and (3) reinterpretation of seismic data by geophysicists. Procedures for locating the second, third and fourth wells are discussed.
