On the Synchronism of Extensional Subsidence of South China Sea Basin and Compressional Uplift of Qinghai-Xizang Plateau
Y. Li
Abstract
The South China Sea is one of the largest marginal sea basins in the circum-Pacific tectonic belt in East Asia, but the Qinghai- Xizang Plateau is the highest young plateau in the world. The formation mechanism and genetic relationship between these two large geomorphic and tectonic features have long been an important theoretical problem. This paper deals with the synchronism of extensional subsidence of the South China Sea Basin and the compressional uplift of Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. I hope the conceptual ideas presented may have evoke a multitude of discussion from colleagues in our profession.
