Geochemistry of Palawan Oils, Philippines: Source Implications

Harold H. Williams, Evelyn N. Reyes, Roger T. Eubank

Abstract

Traditionally the Palawan oils have been interpreted to be marine sourced although their source has never been identified. This interpretation is based largely on the work of Sofer (1984) and relies heavily on isotope data. Advances in gas chromatography-mass spectrometry biomarker techniques and a broader knowledge of their depositional environmental significance now allows a more detailed interpretation of these oils.

Oil recently discovered at Calauit and Calauit South Fields by Fletcher Challenge Petroleum Asia represents a new oil group in the Palawan producing trend. This oil exhibits characteristics of a non-marine algal source.
