Abstract
Heatflow Trends in South East Asia: Implications for Petroleum Prospectivity
Abstract
Heatflow is a principal factor in determining levels of source rock maturity. About 75% of oil reserves in South East Asia are associated with basins having contemporary heatflow values of 2 HFU or more. By considering contemporary heatflow trends, within the context of basin setting and tectonic history, the simple proposition that contemporary heatflow levels may be a reliable indicator of gross basin maturity is reviewed.
Examples are given, in a variety of tectonic settings, to illustrate that contemporary heatflow is not necessarily indicative of palaeo-heatflow and consequently that it may not be a reliable indicator of gross basin maturity. Nevertheless, six broad regions are described where, on the basis of similarity of crustal type and tectonic history, the proposition has valid application for comparative estimates of gross basin maturity.
