Abstract

Some of the research conducted by the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) in Australia that relates to petroleum exploration is reviewed. The research program concerns the development of new methodologies to assist in improvement of the discovery rate for hydrocarbons. Current projects discussed include;

  • new organic petrology techniques,

  • coal bed methane drainage,

  • organic facies relationship to petroleum potential,

  • origin of Proterozoic bitumens,

  • organic geochemical techniques,

  • timescale of basin evolution,

  • fluid flow history in sedimentary basins.

Examples are given with reference to the North Sea and onshore and offshore basins of Australia.
