The North Sea Troll Field: A Multi-disciplinary Approach to Recovery from Thin Oil Zones Combined with Large Scale Gas Production

Tore Lilloe-Olsen, Svein Erik Wennemo, Kjell Arne Oppebøen

Abstract

The Troll Field consists of three major provinces, which communicate both through a common aquifer and through corridors in the hydrocarbon bearing zones. This paper is related to the part of Troll described as Troll West Gas Province. The Troll West Gas Province is situated between Troll East Gas Province and Troll West Oil Province and contains, in addition to large gas volumes, significant amounts of oil in thin layers, spread over a large area.

A plan for development and operation (PDO) for the first TWGP cluster area was approved by the Norwegian authorities in May -94, and production start-up is scheduled for October -96. The remaining oil reserves in the Troll West Gas Province, identified in 4 sub-areas, are currently subject to petroleum technology studies. Multi-disciplinary communication and co-operation have been keys for reaching the objectives and milestones of the work programme. This indicates a possible upgrading of recoverable reserves together with reductions, and could make further development economically more robust than earlier anticipated. The work shows that an early moderate large scale gas production does not harm oil recovery.
