Salsmostratigraphic Analysis and Relative Sea Level Changes in parts of Upper Assam Basin with Special Reference to Paleocane – Eocene Formations

S. Rath, B. Bharali, A. K. Sethi

Abstract

Multifold reflection seismic in conjunction with limited drilling, micropalaeontological and Palynological data have been used to study the Cenozoic sequences in parts of Upper Assam basin in North–East India. The local cycles of relative sea level changes have been constructed and correlated with global cycles. The limit of marine incursion and the shelf break during deposition of Lower to Middle Eocene sediments was delineated and the identified shelf break zone has been correlated with adjoining Bengal and Mahanadi Basins. Seismic facies analysis of Late Paleocene–Lower Eocene sequence deposited essentially in marine environment has helped in targeting/mapping thin Lower Eocene near share clastic sediments and possible shelf zone carbonate build ups for future hydrocarbon exploration.
