Weathervaning Characteristics of Tankers Connected to Single Point Moorings

A. T. Brumley, A. E. Potts

Abstract

Tidal currents and swell waves can force a tanker connected to a SPM to weathervane at an angle to the wind-driven waves and currents. In the absence of better information it is commonplace that the engineer conservatively assumes a significant proportion of the waves will approach the vessel in a quartering direction and to a lesser extent beam on. This assumption can lead to an over approximation of the deck roll motions by over 100%. This paper presents a method for assessing the approximate angle of incidence of the incoming wave for single and tandem systems thereby providing a more realistic basis for evaluating fatigue design and also the planning of marine operations.
