Real Time J-Lay Pipe Deflection and Position Monitor

Michael M. Holland, Rod Edwards

Abstract

The evolution of a robust, non-contact measurement system to accurately and reliably monitor pipe deflection and position within the stinger in real-time is described. This system operates in harsh environmental conditions, both in and out of the water, and over a wide range of illumination from bright sunlight to darkness. Intermittent targets, such as fish, shadows and water aeration, are detected but ignored. Redundant measurements coupled with state of the an digital signal processing techniques such as image correlation and edge detection are used. Vessel motions are measured with six degrees of freedom and pipe position is compensated for vessel motion to provide a more meaningful display.
