Reducing Operational Costs and Improving the Environmental Safety of Calm Buoys

Michael M. Holland, Rod Edwards

Abstract

An increasing awareness of and the exoribitant penalities for oil spills are mandating the use of more sophisticated instrumentation systems on Catenary Anchor Leg Moored (CALM) buoys to aid in spill prevention. Financial pressures and less than reliable performance, however, have tended to discourage their use. To be viable, these systems must reliably prevent oil spills and save the operator money.

The design, installation and test of a real-time, cost effective, monitoring, telemetry and alarm system is described, which offers the buoy operator the opoortunity to increase productivity while reducing the risk of accidents and spills.
