New Life in an Old Basin, An Example from Natuna Sea Block A, West Natuna, Indonesia

Huw Evans

Abstract

Natuna Sea Block A is located in the West Natuna Basin in the extreme north west of Indonesia’s offshore territories. Premier assumed full operatorship of the PSC in January 1997 and this was the catalyst for a regional evaluation of the Eastern Malay and West Natuna Basin areas.

By examining the exploration play types tested to date and their relative success rates inferences have been made concerning the generation, migration and retention capacity of the W Natuna Basin. This has been used to direct further technical evaluation of the area.

Under Premier’s operatorship two successful gas wells, Gajah Puteri-2 and Pelikan-1 have been drilled. Gajah Puteri-2 was extensively cored and significantly added to the knowledge of the sedimentology of the PSC. The well data was also subjected to FAMM analysis and shows that Vitrinite Reflectance suppression occurs within the area of the Natuna Block A PSC.

In recognition of the structural and stratigraphic complexities of the area new 3D seismic data was acquired in 1997 this being the first 3D program in Indonesia to straddle two producing PSC’s. Subsequently Indonesia’s first multi-client 3D survey was initiated in July 1998 covering an area of approximately 1700 km2 of Natuna Sea Block A. This represents an addition of 2500 km2 of 3D seismic data to Natuna Sea Block A in a period spanning 16 months. The 1986 Anoa seismic survey was also reprocessed revealing new stratigraphic and hydrocarbon contact data.

Commercial impetus has been brought to the area via an agreement between Pertamina and a Singapore consortium led by Sembawang for the sale of 325 MMCFD of gas for 22 years starting in 2000. The gas is to be supplied from a consortium of 3 West Natuna PSC’s operated by Premier Oil, Conoco and Gulf.

This is a significant project for Premier Oil, in which commercialisation of West Natuna Sea gas will be achieved in approximately two years since Premier assumed operatorship
