Petroleum Prospectivity of New Zealand's Northwest Frontier

Chris Uruski

Abstract

The petroleum prospectivity of New Zealand's Northwest Frontier, the Greater Taranaki Basin, is being explored. New Zealand is now self ssufficient in gas and produces about 30% of its own oil. The New Caledonia Basin was the site of deposition from at least Jurassic time. Unmetamorphosed Jurassic and Early Cretaceous sediments are present in the Greater Taranaki Basin. A major fluvial sedimentary system crossed the New Zealand region during the Late Cretaceous and culminated in the Taranaki Delta. Source rock of Jurassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene ages are present. A major licensing round covered more than 68,000 km2 of blocks in December 2005. A total of 15,000 km of new 2D seismic data is available free of charge for assessments of this acreage.
