Australia’s New Energy Geography

Marita Bradshaw

Abstract

Australia’s energy geography is changing. The United Nations has confirmed the extension of the continental shelf claimed by Australia in 2008 effectively increasing deepwater frontier basins. Coal Seam Gas development in onshore eastern Australia are rivalling the North West Shelf. The global environment is also changing with a global financial crisis, rise of China and India and the carbon constrains being put in place around the world. Australia is looking to export LNG’s as part of the energy security mix, increasing capacity almost 4 times. Exploration and prospectivity issues have arisen, 13 offshore wells have been drilled with no hydrocarbon discoveries. Limited drilling and the lack of success has led to questions about petroleum system elements including the distribution and quality of source rocks.
