Hydrocarbon Plays in the Eastern Khorat of Thailand and Lao PDR

Nick Comrie-Smith, Guy Paterson, Paul Bransden

Abstract

The geology of the Eastern Khorat of Thailand the Lao is complex and our understanding continues to evolve. The area is relatively lightly explored. Wells have failed to encounter their primary target or have been located off structure. The more heavily explored western part of the Khorat has production of around 100mmscfg/d from 2 fields, both producing from Permian carbonate reservoirs. There are oil and gas seeps in Lao and good shows in nearby Thai wells that prove the presence of a working charge system, most likely from Permian and Triassic rocks. New seismic also shows the presence of large “Khorat style” anticlines, cored with Permian carbonates in platform or “shelfal” facies. Six distinct closures have been identified along this trend. Salamander Energy and partners intend to drill at least one well in this trend, with spud date anticipated towards end 2009/ early2010.
