Southeast Asian Energy Markets — Strategic Implications for the Upstream
Abstract
IHS CERA is a research and consulting firm with offices worldwide. IHS CERA just completed Southeast Asia’s Energy Future, a comprehensive multiclient study of all energy sectors (oil, gas, LNG, coal, power, renewables, carbon) of the six main Southeast Asian nations (Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines). IHS CERA used three scenarios with different socio-political, economic and environmental inputs each with a view towards fuel prices and availability. Massive infrastructure build required is in all scenarios. Under all scenarios the energy intensity of the economies decreases as did the growth rates. Non-hydro renewables can only meet a relatively small portion of the expected increases in demand. The region becomes an even larger net importer of oil while oil, gas and coal remain the key sources of energy. The governments’ commitment to carbon initiatives is limited, with the focus more on prices.
