Exploration in Vietnam: Exploration experiences in a re-emerging Cuu Long basin

K. Meyer, R. Grenier, D. Hoang

Abstract

95% of Talisman’s production comes from three core areas: North America, the North Sea and Southeast Asia. Each core area has different operating, growth/return and asset characteristics, each we employ different business strategies to grow and create value. Southeast Asia asset base balanced oil and natural gas production, relatively longer life assets, defined growth profile through the next five years will double production, large exploration upside. The Indonesia Corridor is a world class asset with built in growth. Malaysia PM-3 has strong existing production and growth via Northern Fields development, and Vietnam Song Doc development. Vietnam block 15-2 holds exciting exploration discoveries with significant upside. Indonesia has world class hydrocarbon basins and large hydrocarbon endowment provides high impact exploration opportunities. Cuu Long is a prolific oil basin in Vietnam and represents a very interesting target for exploration. The primary reservoir to date is a highly unusual granite basement with additional production from the overlying clastics. Thang Long JOC by Talisman and Petro Vietnam (TLJOC) has had a very successful exploration campaign to date in the 15-02 acreage in both the basement and the clastic intervals. TLJOC has learned a great deal about the clastic plays in this area and is applying this evolving knowledge of the clastic plays for future exploration. Clastic trends are emerging in order to supplement the already successful basement exploration and development in the Cuu Long Basin. The future of the Cuu Long Basin will include exploration of the younger clastic stratigraphy–Clastic reservoirs are relatively well known in the Cuu Long Basin and were originally the primary exploration target. With the discovery of the basement reservoirs the clastic reservoirs have been typically penetrated in association with basement rather than being the primary target of exploration. It is unusual to find wells that exclusively target clastic plays. Commercially significant discoveries wait in the clastic stratigraphy of the Cuu Long Basin.
