New gas potential in Block 16 Bangladesh —The beginning of a new era in the Bangladesh upstream industry

John Chambers

Abstract

Santos has a portfolio of near field development projects and exploration projects in Bangladesh. Exploration projects in Sangu Field and Magnama licenses have 4.9 Tcf of gas in place and 3.4 Tcf of recoverable gas with additional underexplored potential in Hatia license 670 Bcf of gas in place. Good asset definition is due to recent 3D seismic acquisition and interpretation. This has led to improved resource definition and scope for optimal field development. A 3+1 well program is planned for 2011/2012. Access to existing infrastructure with large excess capacity is available. A 20" gas pipeline between Sangu Platform and onshore Chittagong plant has a 200mmscf/d capacity. The Chittagong gas plant has two trains of 260mmscf/d each with a total capacity of 520mmscf/d. Santos is currently the only operator with access to these facilities. Free market gas sales agreement mean more access to the large under supplied market. There is an existing demand for gas in the Chittagong area that has a current supply shortfall estimated to be in excess of 230mmscf/d. Proposed projects in the Chittagong area are expected to increase demand if additional columns of gas become available. Gas supply from Block 16, as well as from the grid, is expected to remain well below Chittagong demand in the foreseeable future.
