Abstract
The Makassar Straits New Thoughts on an Old Area
Abstract
The Makassar Straits, West Sulawesi, Indonesia, were formed by mid-Eocene extension, typical Sundaland, grabens and half-grabens. A top syn-rift unconformity of Late Eocene (38-40 Ma) age is present in the Makassar Straits. The Makassar basement is stretched continental crust. Deepwater sediments were deposited in response to tectonic events happening in adjacent Borneo and Sulawesi during the Late Eocene—Neogene. A mid-Miocene pulse of east-directed quartzose turbidites were then deposited in deepwater. All petroleum system elements all present, charge principal risk in the Makassar Straits.
