New Frontier Exploration Opportunities on Australia's Southwest Margin

Chris Nicholson, Chris Boreham, Irina Borissova, Emmanuelle Grosjean, Andrew Jones, John Kennard, Daniel Mantle, Gabriel Nelson

Abstract

Australia is opening up frontier exploration opportunities on the southwest margin. The Mentelle Basin is located between the Naturaliste Plateau and Vlaming Sub-basin and has 7 to 11 km of sedimentary fill. Exploration in this frontier area offer multiple source rock intervals, regionally extensive reservoirs, volcanic and marine regional seals, multiple play types and the petroleum system models support the possibility of an active petroleum system. A large effort to map the extent, sedimentary thickness and major structures in the Zeewyckand North Houtman has been undertaken offshore North Perth and South Carnarvon Basins. The North Perth Basin has several potential source systems with multiple play type in Permian and Triassic rocks. The South Canarvon Basin and Exmouth Sub-basin are underexplored frontier with proven Mesozoic petroleum systems and close to indrastructure and a premier producing hydrocarbon province.
