Exploration of the Arafura Basin Indonesia

Joko S. Miharwatiman, Ludy Andria, Derik W. Kleibacker, Jon Elliot, Jesse A. Baker

Abstract

The drilling campaign conducted in the Amborip-VI and Arafura Sea Blocks resulted in the most complete sample of the Paleozoic stratigraphy in the Arafura Basin. Successfully encountered both Upper and Lower Paleozoic sediments. Upper Paleozoic Permian section contained interbedded shale, sandstones and dolomite with poor porosity and permeability. Lower Paleozoic dominated by a thick section of Ordovician sediments mainly consist of shale with some sandstones intervals and dolomitic limestone with poor porosity and permeability. Arafura Paleozoic basin fill had undergone deeper burial and more severe uplift and erosion than had been estimated prior to drilling. Understanding the burial history of Paleozoic (older) basins is critical to the source and more importantly the "preservation" of reservoir and the hydrocarbons.
