Abstract
Bualuang Oilfield, Gulf of Thailand: A Success story utilising Integrated Field Development Planning
Abstract
Block B8/83 Production License in the Gulf of Thailand contains the Bualuang oil field. The Gulf of Thailand consists of 5 main Tertiary basins, Chumphon, Western, Kra, Songhkla and Pattani. Basin inception is Oligocene in age and are N-S oriented extensional grabens and half grabens. Bualuang is located in the Western Basin, essentially a half graben. The area was affected by regional trans-tension in the late Miocene. The underlying Pre-Tertiary rocks consist of Permian Ratburi group carbonates and Mesozoic intrusives. The Main Bualuang Field is a tilted fault block with a primary T4 sand reservoir in excessive of 50m thick. The primary T4 reservoir is a braided fluvial channel sand with very high NTG and excellent porosity and permeability. Significant value has added through substantial reserve increases. Challenges for reserves growth have been identified and assessed. Integrated field development planning has included geosteering production wells for managing drawdown, reservoir studies for understanding detailed reservoir architecture, simulation models to plan infill well locations, and rock physics to characterize the reservoirs. Ample running room has been left with additional pools to be explored and exploited.
