Abstract
Australia's Emerging Energy Resources
Abstract
Australia is aware that more energy will be needed and the energy mix will change reflecting new technologies and environmental concerns. Gas is part of the answer. Australia has conventional gas resources as well as coal seam gas and LNG. There is 157 Tcf of conventional gas mostly on the North West Shelf, 93 Tcf of coal seam gas onshore eastern Australia and shal gas potential as large as 396 Tcf. The current LNG production is 20 mtpa with long term goals of 100+ mtpa with 7 new plants under construction and the world's first FNLG and GSG LNG. There is 7 BBO of crude oil in Australia with 4 BBO in Gippsland Basin. There is potential in offshore frontier basin and in tight oil and shale liquids in onshore basins. On 14 November 2012 the Australian Government announced additional funding to Geoscience Australia to improve our understanding of Australia's onshore and offshore resource base.
