ABSTRACT
This chapter summarizes the basic information on the development of views and fundamental geophysical data concerning the lithosphere of the Carpathians and the Pannonian Basin. Mostly, those results and interpretations published in the past are mentioned and still keep their validity. It is obvious that the period of syntheses of geoscience information concerning crustal–lithosphere research in the Carpathian region still has not reached its apex. The main reason for it is the absence and limited availability of data from particular countries because of reasons of legislation (Romania and Ukraine) and commercial problems (Poland, Hungary, and currently, the Czech and Slovak Republics).
