The Pauls Valley oil field is located in Garvin County, Oklahoma, approximately 4 miles northwest of the city of Pauls Valley. The Pure Oil Company found the structure by a correlation reflection seismograph survey, and later detailed it by continuous profiling. They purchased leases on the structure and drilled the first well to the Bromide sandstone at a depth of 3,906 feet. This well is their No. 1 M. A. Teter in the SW1/4 SW1/4 NW1/4 Sec. 31, T. 4 N., R. 1 E., which flowed at the rate of 100 barrels per hour in May 1942.

Development of the field found production in Pennsylvanian sandstones which onlap the eroded pre-Pennsylvanian rocks.

The structure is anticlinal with faulting in pre-Pennsylvanian rocks which probably dates the first major movement to be the same as that of the Hunton anticline on which it is located. Origin of the Hunton anticline, whose buried counterpart is popularly called the Pauls Valley uplift, is believed to have been in post-Springeran time and continued into post-Morrowan time. Later northwestward tilting and minor faulting took place in late Vanoss (late Virgil) time.

The productive area now covers 1,900 acres of which 820 acres produce from the Bromide sandstones of the Simpson group of the Ordovician System.
